how thin is the blade on this prop?

The top of this blade is about 3/8's of an inch wide, the bottom of the blade is 3/16th's of an inch wide. This item is very realistic looking, light weight, and when you spray it down with good quality blood, it looks amazing.

would this exact machete be good for a jason costume?

I don't know about Jason, but it is a proper-looking machete and it served very well in a production of Little Shop of Horrors.

Will it scare the living nightmare out of kids?

If that is what you are going for I assume kids who dont know its a fake would be.

is it very durable/able to hit things with

It is pretty durable...you probably would be able get a couple good hits in, but it does have the tendency of bending toward the handle. So it would not be my first choice for extended hand to hand combat.
