No, they are nylon hair. So it is not stiff.

Are you able to clean the brushes?

Yes soap and water will clean them if you are using watercolors or acrylic paint. Oil paints could not be cleaned with soap and water

Why does the description say natural hog hair but in the specs and elsewhere if says synthetic/nylon?

Mine came with natural bristles
