Short Stories in Norwegian for Beginners (Teach Yourself)

For a student, there is real satisfaction in reading a story all in Norwegian. It makes you feel like you are making progress. Yes, this is simple Norwegian, but it still feels like an accomplishment. The stories themselves are interesting, if not a little silly. Sometimes very silly. But the stories are great at introducing new vocabulary and expressions and then using them repeatedly. The first time I saw "senket blikket," I had to look it up. But the next five times it came up, I knew it and now I will never forget it. My method was to read it once with the dictionary. Then listen to the audio (purchased separately) while reading it. Finally, I listened to the audio without the book. I think "Short Stories in Norwegian" will be frustrating for total beginners, because it's way more advanced than that. And it will be super easy for advanced learners. But for those of us at the intermediate level, it's a great addition to your Norsk learning library. En veldig nyttig bok.

I've been using Duolingo for years and recently finished the German course and am now doing Norwegian, Dutch, Swedish and Danish simultaneously due to how similar they are and also Spanish. Someone had told me the best way to continue learning is to get children's books in the language you are trying to master, which I have done and has proven to be beneficial.....but then I saw these and thought they would work as well. They do! They are a great way to not only extend but to enhance my learning. There are words in here that I didn't learn via Duolingo and it has a glossary for any word in bold. I loved this book so much that I started getting them in the other languages I am working on as well as German for refresher purposes. I definitely recommend.

My grandson is teaching himself the Norwegian language in readying for a future trip. We talked about being ready to read thus I bought this level of reading for him. Reading both German and French helped me become fluent in both languages.

This is a nice collection of interesting stories in natural, real Norwegian aimed at the upper beginner. So hard to find material like this for the English-speaking Norwegian learner! I've been burned before by kindle stories in norsk for learners that turned out to be obvious machine translations. This is a fun and useful addition to my Norwegian learning resources. I hope there's an edition for intermediate learners on the way! (A word of caution: since there is no kindle Norwegian dictionary, having an A2 level vocabulary or a good dictionary and a bit of patience is probably in order!)

The book arrived quickly. It's a good book to start your self instruction; however, the "free" audio that is supposed to be accessible online, isn't. It looks like you'll have to spend another 11 USD to purchase a copy.

There are so few resources for English speakers to learn Norwegian that I was so excited when I found this book! It is not for a total beginner but is written in easy language for those moving towards an intermediate level (it says for A2-B1 learners and I'd say that's pretty accurate). If your learning style is like mine where you pick up a lot from reading, then definitely buy this book! I hope they come out with another level in the future as another reviewer commented.

Fun learning tool for Norwegian.

Great approach to learning Norsk... you get a story in Norwegian, then all the key vocabulary. Then read it again after you’ve read the translation of the vocabulary, and there you go - now you can read Norwegian. Get the accompanying audiobook to learn the nuances of pronunciation.

Leitura agradável e fluida, que prende o leitor. O texto possui parágrafos concisos e coerentes com abordagem essencial da gramática. Recomendo.

Lo compré para ir repasando en verano, ya que paso del curso A1 al A2. Es algo complicado para un nivel tan básico pero los dos primeros relatos (unos 8 kapittel) los he podido entender prácticamente en su totalidad, buscando detalles en el traductor para completarlo. Te hace sentir bien ver que has aprendido algo!

Each chapter draws you into the story and I found myself learning new vocabulary and phrases quite naturally. A really enjoyable approach for learning a language, and instilling enthusiasm and confidence. Heartily recommend 👍🏼

Everyday after my Norwegian lesson, I try to read more of this book. I don't know all or even most of the words but I keep going and I am figuring things out. The book's author says this works and I believe him, as I am getting more and more familiar with the sentence structure and not translating back to English all the time. I love it and would recommend.
