Is the slit for the pedal crank large enough to easily slide the cover on without taking the pedal itself off? It looks pretty narrow.

I have no problem getting it on over my Shimano XTR SPD pedals. I believe it would easily fit over Look style road pedals as well.

Can this be a good tool to be used in transport on a rear hitch? (Going down the road @ 70mph?)

My drive train is 2x11 with a long cage rear derailleur. The cover fits tight and the velcro piece is substantial. It would probably stay on but in doubt you could put another small bungee strap to help hold it on.

The maximum chainring size for the mtb cover is 38t, and the maximum for the road bike cover is 53t.

Can this be used to protect chain and drivetrain from contaminants while transporting bike on roof rack?

I only used it on a hanging bike carrier on the back of my car in dusty and rainy conditions and it worked better than having nothing at all. I would think it would do a better job on a roof carrier, but it doesn't seal completely closed so water will get in when it rains. I started wrapping my chain and drivetrain in plastic wrap first, and then put the chain protector on, and this setup was much more effective at keeping water and contaminants out.
