Is it really only 1" deep?

More like 3/4”. Works great. Use Liquid nails to mount it .

It says that screws or fasteners aren't needed, so how is this installed and secured in the drywall?

Just use "instant bond caulk" & 'blue' tape to hold in until it sets. (a few min.)

Can the door be removed ?

This is a lightweight door without fasteners. It is designed to be adhered to the wall with caulk. It will leave damage around the opening when pried off.

What should the size of hole be

A very tight fit on my hole is 7 11/16 X 11 3/4 inches. In a sheetrock opening. Frame panel stays in place without adhesive on a wall.
