Would this work as square faced transfer shovel, for moving lots of dirt, stone, or mulch?

I have used this mostly for edging purpose. It would not hold lots of dirt because it has a pretty straight profile. Good sturdy product!

Can I sharpen the blade? It does't seem like I can.

Yes, it came fairly sharp out of the box, however it is a heavy guage steel that would sharpen if need be with a metal file or angle grinder.

is the blade flat or rounded?

The blade itself is about 7 and 1/2 inch wide. the edge is a little "smooth" rounded, I found it easy to use and to dig. it is my favorite one to use among the others.

How long is the blade?

The blade is 12.25 inches. I like this spade! :)
