Has anyone else noticed the shelves in it arnt even, having to send mine back becasue they arnt straight at all

I'm thinking you may just have a faulty one. My shelves are perfectly straight...

do they use screws to hang it up

the shelf comes with the fittings to fix to the wall using whatever fixtures you prefere (screws, hooks, etc)

Can this be freestanding?

Yes, you can also put it anywhere in the room. It is not absolutely necessary to mount it on a wall.

Is it big enough to store cds on?

Unfortunately the shelf is not big enough to store CDs on it. The distance of the shelf floors is only 11 cm.
