Yes. They have a square metal pull tab that will lock the tongs shut. Keep in mind that the length of the metal tab is considered in the overall length of the tong. The tongs are actually 16-inches in length when the pull tab is not considered.

what is the grip made of? Is it silicone? Can it melt as our older tools did when too close to heat?

It is made of hard plastic and doesn't melt.
