Stars: Gary Sinise, Joely Richardson, Gordon Pinsent, Jordy Benattar.FOLLOW THE STARS HOMEBased on the novel by Luanne Rice, this positive family film deals with some hard issues: abortion, childhood disability, single parenting, grieving the death of a spouse and father, domestic violence, and substance abuse. That doesn't sound like a great mix for family entertainment, but although realistic, it is tastefully done. It is also is completely clean without swearing and doesn't dwell on the unhappy scenes. It has some good messages with a happy ending, and all the loose ends are nicely resolved. Probably the main theme of the story is the value of human life, but also that when you truly love someone you are willing to give of yourself.Dianne Parker (Kimberly Williams) and Mark McCune (Eric Close) marry and are expecting their first child. When they find out that their unborn child will be severely disabled, Mark urges Dianne to have an abortion. She refuses and Mark abandons the family leaving her to be a single parent. Mark's brother, David (Campbell Scott), is a friend of Dianne's who has been secretly in love with her since before she was married to his brother. He is conveniently a pediatrician and is a great help to Dianne. Worried for Dianne's heath because she is overworking herself, he arranges for Amy (Alexa Vega) to work as a mother's helper over the summer.GRACE AND GLORIETwo very different women create a powerful friendship at a critical time in both of their lives. Then Gracie makes a choice to get a job, succeed in school, find stability. And her choice isn't just for herself. At the age of 17, she decides to be the mother, emotionally and legally, her siblings never had.IN LOVE AND WARWhile leading an ill-fated commando raid behind enemy lines during World War II, British lieutenant Eric Newby (Callum Blue) is captured and imprisoned. As the two spend more time together, Eric discovers his feelings for Wanda have grown far beyond gratitude. This newly-found love is shared by his beautiful rescuer. Every day, however, the Germans seem to get closer to finding him. Wanda and her friends face increasing risks to find new ways to keep him safe. Although Livy can offer little of practical value on a farm--she can't cook, for one--Ray doesn't hold that against her as he patiently suffers through her dinner disasters. He tries to please her in every way, never seeming to realize that it is HE that is doing her the big favor.MY SISTER'S KEEPERIt isn't always easy for sisters to find common ground and develop mutual respect. My Sister's Keeper is a poignant and sensitive portrayal of a real-life story of two sisters and their journey toward self-discovery and understanding. Academy Award® winner Kathy Bates (Misery, Titanic) provides a remarkable performance as Christine, a woman who longs for independence and the personal fulfillment she associates with "an ordinary life." She is constantly frustrated, though, as she must rely on others for support. Elizabeth Perkins (Big, 28 Days) stars as Judy, her high-achieving younger sister, who lives a work-centered life as an art editor in New York City. Both their lives are interrupted when their mother (Lynn Redgrave, Georgy Girl, Gods ans Monsters) suddenly dies. As the two sisters search for common ground between their very different worlds, they struggle to forge the type of strong loving relationship they hope will lead them to an unconditional acceptance of one another. My Sister's Keeper is an intimate and unforgettable look at an extraordinary life we rarely get to see.NOVEMBER CHRISTMASA father determined to bring some joy to his sick little girl is trying to move up the holidays. Taylor, a prisoner dispatched to rescue a pregnant woman clinging to a tree above the raging river. He locates the desperate Addie, portrayed by Jeanne Tripplehorn (The Firm), and brings her down safely. J.J. does not abandon her, vowing to keep his word and return her home. In the foreign waterworld of the Bayou where they have drifted off course, Addie gives birth. J.J.'s tenderness toward her newborn child touches Addie deeply. Their journey rekindles a current in each of their hearts that was extinguished long ago. Oscar winning writer Horton Foote (Tender Mercies, To Kill A Mockingbird) masterfully brings to the screen William Faulkner's compassionate story of goodness and the triumph of the human spirit.REDWOOD CURTAINLithgow's performance as an adoptive father striving to encourage his adopted daughter's, Salonga, musical career will touch a lot of buttons. Her longing to know her birth family is topical as well as intensely personal, a good blend. The adoptive mother flits in and out; obviously not all that interested in her adoptive daughter. Lithgow's sudden death leads to to a further estrangement between mother and daughter. A trip to visit Lithgow's sister starts a whole new series of events for Salonga and her meeting with Daniels and all that comes from that. The ending is a complete surprise but at the same times, explains much.THE RETURN OF THE NATIVEThe breathtaking English countryside sets the stage for a spellbinding triangle of love, desire and destiny in Thomas Hardy's timeless romantic classic about an ambitious beauty and the two men who will sacrifice everything to claim her.
