Can you cut the sticks down to smaller sizes and therefore less use time?

Technically Yes you can cut it but you will waste the tail end each time and use the stick faster. It is much better to just use the snuffer cap that immediately stops the wick burning any more so you can use it again from the place on the wick where it has stopped. Think of it like a candle. You don't cut the wick on the candle. You just stop the flame and start again when you are ready.

Will domestic smoke alarms go off with this pen in use to test for drafts

Good morning, thank you for your question. The smoke pen can be also used to test smoke alarms, therefore in theory it could trigger a domestic smoke alarm. However, it only produces a thin line of smoke so, if far enough away from a smoke alarm it should be fine, particularly if it is extracted straight out. Hope this helps. It only takes a few seconds to tell if there is a draught. Snuff the burn after each window test! Don't leave it burning as I can imagine that you might indeed trigger the smoke alarm.
