What is the width of the ring where the two ends meet?

The width from the top to the bottom of the ring where the ends meet is 3/16 of an inch (less than a 1/4 of an inch). Very sturdy and not at all pliable. My daughter wears this ring daily and it's as shiny and durable as the day I gave it to her. She loves it and stacks with her other gold rings!

Can this be used as a ring guard of sorts to keep a loose diamond ring secure?

Not sure. It's adjustable so maybe you could fit your diamond ring in it somehow.

What is the material of this ring made of?

I'm not sure. I should have read up on it before I bought it. It's super cute and I love it but it lasted for a minute, if you like silver eventually ...lol
