This is the distance the object is away from the film, 100cm would be roughly 39 inches thick (but it's showing an object 39 inches away from the film).

How will this film do in an uninsulated garage in a cold northeastern winter? Will it hold up ok?

Sorry I cannot answer your question. This was purchased for someone else for use on a bathroom window. However after receipt she decided to use a curtain instead. To my knowledge, she still has not used this.
