Can you put hot ashes in it?

No you can’t! I was specifically told by my chimney sweep that this was the wrong bucket to purchase and not to put any hot ash in this bucket if I do not want my house or property to burn.

Does the lid snap in place for a good seal?

No the lid does not snap shut. It simply sits on top with a lip to keep it placed properly. If it tipped over the lid would most likely fall off and ashes could spill out.
