Q: How do you use this pyrometer to measure the temperature of a kiln? Do you open the door and insert the probe or do you touch it to a shelf?

My kiln is a small one for jewelry making and has a hole in the top with a stopper that can be removed for venting. The pyrometer came with a ceramic disk that fits perfectly into the hole. I dropped the probe that way and it worked well. I don't know what kind of kiln you have. I hope this was helpful.

Q: Does the display read out to 2300F or do you have to change the display to Celsius?

I do believe so. If you blow the picture up, it shows the range, both in Celsius and Fahrenheit. In actuality, the hi end is 2372 Fahrenheit. And 1300° C

Q: Will this pyrometer work for glass slumping in ceramic kiln

Yes, I use it in my ceramic kiln to cone 8 without any problems. I have also used it in raku firings to about 1900°F so I don't see why you would have any trouble with it. You can permanently mount it or run it thru a peephole with some wool as I normally do. I really like the unit, it is accurate and the price is cheaper than comparable units.
