Bad reputation ok for an unauthorized book.
This book covers the time in Joan's life from her early days; just starting out with the Runaways to the making of the movie the Runaways. There are a few details about her early life and family at the beginning of the book but not a lot of personal information about that time in her life. What liked most about this book was the information about how she switched from the Runaways to the Blackhearts and all that was involved with that. Also the trouble she had getting the industry and music labels to accept her and her band; that's a part of her life I knew very little about. What I liked least about the book was how often Dave Thompson added his own opinions on bands and artists within the music industry. If your going to be critical of the other artists of that era; a biography about someone else is'nt the best place to do that; because people are tempted to think the person your writing about feels the same way and they may not. I also felt he went on and on at times about other bands in the music scene at that time (late 70's early 80's); and while interesting, these stories often had little to nothing to do with Joan Jett. Of course the best thing would be if Joan wrote her own memoirs so we could see how she feels about these things for herself. That's the book I'm waiting for.

Cool Guitar Chick
Dave Thompson's BAD REPUTATION; The Unauthorized Biography of Joan Jett is a servicable careerprofile that offers lots of information about her emergence as a teenage rocker with The Runaways, her various recording sessions and tours, and her collaborations with others. Written in what manywould find a slow-moving, fact-focused style, Thompson's book incorporates an acceptable mapping out ofmany of the specifics of Jett's career.Through the popularity of her freewheeling version of I Love Rock'n'Roll, Joan Jett became widelyknown as a hard-rockin' guitar-slinging star whose music conveyed a lot of attitude. A talentedrhythm player, her powerful, crunching, in your face style made a strong statement for genderequality on the rock scene. Joan Jett's intensely loyal following has remained a constant in herlife--she comes across as an able performer whose commitment to the spirit of rock is sincere.Although the main title of Thompson's biography is the same as one of Joan Jett's popular albums,it suggests that revealing stories about her personal life will be part of the unauthorized taleof BAD REPUTATION. There isn't much of this kind of content to be found, though. Concentrating onJett's music is an acceptable alternative, however, serving up the kind of information that isoften missing in biographies of rock musicians.Jett has made no secret of the fact that she is gay and also seems to have made somedecisions about remaining circumspect with respect to her private life. Until Joan Jett decides towrite her own story or somebody with a deeper interest in it has a go at creating a biographythat is closer to the 'definitive" ideal, Thompson's somewhat tepid summing up of her professionalcareer will have to do.

A hard days read.
This is an unauthorized biography. Most of the time this kind of biographies are the best read, because they are not limited by the objects censorship. In most cases they are written with great love, for the music, for the star and, very VERY important, with an excellent eye for the pictured decade(s).The fashion, the clubs, the mood and moral and music. Most of the unauthorized biographies are therefore big books with a very small font.Well, when I opened the book I knew this wasn't the case. The book is far to thin. No,I didn't find myself back in The English Disco. No I could't share Joan's love for the Glittersound. No I did't went on tour with the girls. But, come on, I was still very curious what would happen to Joan after the Runaways parted. And, ofcourse, I wanted to know all about her performance in the Rocky Horror Show. I wanted to be there. No, alas, that's where the book really starts to disappoint. It reads like a chronological list of events and album releases.Decades past, but do not come to life at all. The 80ties, nineties, zeros, Joan plays on but does't seem to be a part of the changing times. No, it wasn't a good read. I would like to give it 2,5 star if I only knew how.ps. And there aren't much pictures in the book either.
