They're painted. I ordered a lot of different pencils that day (I teach math) and these were my least favorite.

Q: How do you know that you are authentic?

If you are asking if the pencils are authentic, then I believe they are.

Q: Is the lead in these pencils colored or iis it just the pencil itself

Thank you for your inquiry. The graphite in these pencils are #2 soft, black. The barrel has the neon colors. I hope this helps.
