Owned for 10 years, went through several winter storms, still in great shape
Its been 10 years since I purchased this and I figure its time to write a review about it. I keep this in my under trunk storage in my trunk and it comes out during emergencies. I love the retracting mechanism because it provides a solid connection instead of using friction. Its light weight which makes all the difference when you have to actually use it. This shovel is a decent size and makes quick work out of any digging you need to do. Its dug me out of a few snow storm, emergencies, and my kids used it to dig sand at the beach. Its a bit banged up by now but still trucking along. The bright red/orange color is also great for using it as a signaling device.

Perfect for My Teenaged Son's Emergency Kit in His Car! (And Here's What Else I Put in There for Him)
My son recently got his first car, and so I wanted to be sure that he had everything that he might need in an emergency situation, including a car emergency kit, Fix a Flat, mylar blankets, a car hammer, a first aid kit, and...this shovel!Because we live in Colorado, I wanted to be sure that he had a shovel (snow!) in the car, and this one is just perfect! It has every feature that I wanted for my son:- It's metal (not plastic which can crack and break)- It's lightweight- It's small, but not *too* small- It has a decent-sized shovel head (pan? tip? What *do* you call the business end of a shovel??)- It *can* be broken down to make it smaller if you need to, but doesn't fold, so the handle won't collapse/break on you when you need leverage with deeper snow- It fit in the container (a Rubbermaid-type box) that I got to hold all of his emergency supplies in his carIn case anyone's interested, here are the other things that I put in there for him:Emergency kit: Bridgestone Auto Emergency KitFix a Flat: Fix-A-Flat S420-6 Aerosol Tire Inflator with Hose for Standard Tires - 16 oz.Car Window Hammer/Seat Belt Cutter: Car Hammer - Auto Safety Seatbelt Cutter Glass Window Punch Breaker Emergency Rescue Disaster Escape ToolFirst Aid Kit: Small First Aid Kit 100 Piece: Car, Home, SurvivalMylar Blankets: Emergency Mylar Thermal Blankets (Pack of 10)Snow Scraper and Brush: Hopkins 999CT Mallory 35" Ultra MAXX Snow Brush (Colors may vary)Handheld Car Vacuum: Armor All 12V Car Vac, AA12V1 0901I also bought him this waterless car cleaning and waxing kit, based on research and reviews, and he told me just last night that he uses it all the time, and that it's awesome!Waterless Car Wash Wax Kit 144 oz. Great little shovel!
Great little shovel! Collapses down to fit in the trunk easily (in the wheel well compartment), sturdy, and was great for shoveling my driveway. It's not big but it did the job just fine for the price! Nice to have an emergency shovel in the car.

Just what I wanted (and needed)
I bought this for bike or walking trips around the neighborhood, mainly to clear paths blocked by plowed snow; I wanted something that would fit in a backpack. It does, and I have used it for that, but I've discovered it's also good for clearing small spaces, like around the fire hydrant in front of the house. It fits even in my child-size backpack that I use just for walking (I have a bigger backpack for shopping trips on the bike) and it's not heavy. And the size keeps me from trying to lift too much of this heavy Eastern snow so it's better for my back.It comes in two pieces, shovel and the other part, but you can also separate the other part into another two for a total of three pieces if you really need to save space. The length of the tube is slightly adjustable with push buttons and here's a TIP to deal with those: Push them in and then quickly turn them sideways. That will keep the buttons depressed while you move the pieces to the hole you want them in. Then you just turn the piece sideways until you see the buttons through the hole; once they're in position they'll pop into place. I had a bit of trouble getting them adjusted at first until I discovered this so I thought I'd save people some time by passing that along. The tip is getting a bit worn; I can see a bit of metal now. That's probably my fault for trying to shovel ice but the shovel seems so sturdy that I think it'll be fine (as long as I stop trying to shovel ice).

No brainer purchase! Great product!
Lightweight, sturdy, compact, and even cool looking! Great little shovel that's strong enough to break through compacted snow and ice. I ordered this one to try it out and after use, I've ordered another. Weight is about the same as a plastic shovel but with the aluminum build, it'll last. The only negatives I can see, which were not enough to knock it down a star, are the aluminum and the price. $20 is a little high for a shovel that sits in the trunk. However, would you pay $20 to know that you will be able to get out of a pinch during a snowstorm? I would! So what's wrong with the aluminum? Answer: not much, but when you're on asphalt and you continuously scrap the bottom while breaking through ice, the aluminum slowly wears away. Even after one use, it seemed to develop a jagged sharp edge. Now, this will only add to the breakthrough capability, but I just wanted to mention it as after every use, it may continue to wear down. Regardless, the plastic shovel I was using rarely cut well enough to even reach the road and when it did, it broke down the shovel way quicker than this aluminum shovel that is being sold here.So as you can see, my negatives were spun into positives because let's remember what we are buying here... A shovel you keep in your car. Don't expect this thing to change your life, but rest assured you have a fighting chance of getting unstuck in a snowstorm on your way home from work. That's all I needed to know before I ordered another.
