Q: does it or does it not filter fluoride out of the water?

Although this filter is reported to not filter fluoride, one can add chelation drops to the untreated water and then filter. This should aside the filter in removing even fluoride. Hope this helps.

Q: How often can you expect to replace filters?

The documentation says to change the multi-stage filter every 500 gallons, (every 6 months.) The ceramic dome filter at the top is supposed to last 1,000 gallons, (1 year.) I guess it depends on how fast you go through 500 gallons of water filtered.

Q: It looks like there are several different filter cartridges. How often do they need to be replaced. Is the maintenance price worth the price of admission

I'm actually out of town but I did read that the containers need to be cleaned like every three months.I believe the filters last from 6 mos to a year. I'm sure it drpends on your currant water quality.I also did research the cost of the parts and found them to be very affordable! Just look on Amazon and you will see too...I definitely wouldn't let that be a deterrent! It's definitely cheaper than the faucet or pitcher models! I love this product!Hope this helps!

Q: Why do the 5 stage filters install differently than the pictures? Black on the bottom or black on the top???

...be sure it threads evenly onto the middle ring, after several tries I put the ring on the counter lightly pressed the filter in place and then screwed in, screwed evenly the first try
