I purchased this system 2 weeks ago, and nothing ...
I purchased this system 2 weeks ago, and nothing but trouble from the first day. It worked flawlessly for about 3 hours, then the trouble began. “System Off-line”. Rebooted the system, rebooted my router, refreshed the mobile app, refreshed the PC page. On-line, Off-line, On-line, Off-line…back and forth, every day. I believe I had one 24-hour period where it actually stayed On-line without an issue, but aside from that single day, it’s been absolutely maddening. When you investigate trouble-shooting suggestions, you find that this issue has dogged this NETGEAR product from day one when they brought it to market…years ago! To date, they haven’t corrected the issue, which tells me that they aren’t interested in doing so. For what they charge for this system, it should work flawlessly, all day, every day…but that certainly isn’t the case. So, today, I’m packing up this system and SENDING IT BACK! I don’t have the time or the patients to sit in front of my computer and run up and down the stairs to reboot my entire wireless system all day. Take my advice, find another alternative and don’t purchase this system; you’ll only find yourself pulling your hair out and wasting a lot of time trying to find a fix that doesn’t exist.

Quick and easy to set up but is lacking some basic security features...
The media could not be loaded. There are many reviews about this item but as someone that has had multiple cameras installed around the house for years and have gone through several DVRs I may have something to offer with my review. I was skeptical at first because of the wireless problems (complains) I read about in other reviews but after using it for a week, it has been working as described so we like this system a lot mainly due to the ease of use and I have purchased a second one for my daughter's house. The cameras were already charged to 100% out of the box and the camera I installed that covers the driveway and the front door of the house is still at 74% charge after 8 days. This camera records about 30 clips per day and every clip is about 15 seconds. What is even more amazing is that we have had cold weather in the 20s during the day and close to 0 during the night so the batteries are doing great for such harsh temperatures. Netgear also offers solar panel charging but in my case one camera does not see much of the sun during the day so I have no choice but to keep recharging. In the attached video, you can see how the notifications work on a phone and a sample of night vision. I also added a clip that was recorded in the back yard because the clouds were moving fast that day and sunlight conditions were changing often. That is a problem with the motion detection because that day it recorded over 40 clips of nothing other that sunlight intensity changes so it was wasting battery life for no reason. The bright specs during night vision are the laser Christmas lights I have projected on the house.███ UPDATE 1/21/2018 - It has been a month now that the cameras have been operating in very cold conditions as low as -10 degrees while only being above the freezing point a couple of days during this month and the batteries are holding up better than I thought they would be. The front camera that records around 40 clips a day is at 29% of remaining battery and the rear camera that rarely records anything is at 80%. The stated operating temperature for these cameras is -4 to 113 F but this month they have been working for many hours below -4. One very cold night I got a message from the rear camera that said "Your camera needs to warm up" not allowing live view. The front camera was operating normally. If I get that message again, I will take a temperature reading on the camera body. What remains to be seen is if the batteries will keep performing as well over time. ██████ UPDATE 4/16/2018 - It has been almost 4 months now that I have had these cameras installed and they have been working flawlessly. They have never had any connection issues and the batteries have been performing as advertised. The rear camera battery has not been charged since installation and after 4 months it is at 24%. This is a camera that is not used often during the winter but some days the squirrels have been triggering up to 60 recordings. I charged the front camera once and today it is at 5% needing a charge (at 15% I get an email). The front camera records at least 40 clips per day and some days over 70. ███Installation:This camera security system is the simplest that I ever had to set up and operate. I received the package on a Thursday and since most of my camera locations are closer to the garage area and I have a CAT5 network connection in the garage, I figured I can plug the main unit in and then install the cameras the next day. The configuration of the device did not take more than 5 minutes before I was able to view both of the cameras feed on my phone and the default settings worked great so I did not have to tweak them other than letting the cameras send me notifications on my phone and stopping them from sending me notifications via email. Here are the steps needed:-Download the application to your phone.-Plug the main unit with the included wire to your modem/router. The main unit needs to be plugged in and you cannot use your WiFi to connect it.-Plug the main unit to the power outlet and power it on.-Follow the steps on your phone to create a username and password by providing an email address and add the device to your account (takes about 2 minutes)-Put the batteries in the cameras.-Sync the cameras to the main unit by pressing and holding the sync button for about 3 seconds.-You are done! You can now see the cameras on your phone or can go to arlo.netgear.com and access everything there.-I used 2 mounts ( Wall Mount Outdoor Indoor For Arlo) ) for the cameras and if you have a screw gun or screw driver, it will not take more than 5 minutes per camera because they are magnetic and you can adjust them easily.-I had a portable 250GB hard drive that I was not using and plugged it in one of the USB ports. It recognized it immediately, asked me to format it and that was it. Now recordings are saved at Netgear's website but also locally if the Internet service is out. But that is not so user friendly (see Cons below)Accessories:- Mounting - You can mount these cameras on a metal ball mount magnetically or using a 1/4" screw mount same like you would use for a camera. The cameras come with a metallic hemisphere that you can hang on the wall and then mount the cameras magnetically on it but that is meant for indoor use. I purchased the Skylety 3 Pack Table Ceiling Metal Magnetic Mount for Arlo that works well and the Adjustable Mount Outdoor Indoor For Arlo (2 Pack White and Black) which is better because you can unscrew the ball from it and mount the camera using the 1/4 inch screw. The second one also has a 1/4 inch screw tether that you can use when you mount the camera magnetically so it takes more time for someone to take the camera off the mount and protects the camera from accidentally falling off. The magnets on the cameras work well and strong wind will not move the cameras at all.- Skins - You can purchase skins to protect the finish of the camera and to make them blend with the background but you should avoid skins that have a "lip" around the lens. I purchased the Silicone Skins for Arlo Pro (4 pcs Gray) (See attached photos) and I came to find out that the "lip" will create a haze effect during night vision because the IR light reflects on it and the recordings are useless because they look like there is thick fog. So if you buy skins that have this "lip" be prepared to cut it off with siscors.- Solar Panel - Netgear offers the Arlo by NETGEAR Solar Panel - Arlo Pro & Arlo Go Compatible but be aware that this panel will not operate in temperatures under 32 degrees and it needs direct sunlight to be effective which is difficult to do because the mount that comes with it is not long enough to allow this solar panel to see the sky when you mount it under the extension of your roof. I purchased a 7 inch Adjustable Photographic Friction Articulating Arm Mount (See attached photos) and was able to bring it out enough to see more sun but mine died after 2 days and I am currently waiting for a replacement from Netgear. When it was operational, it would charge the battery about 7 percent per day while it had direct sunlight for 6 hours a day. ███ Update 5/19/2018: The replacement panel has been working for a couple of weeks now. When I plugged in the camera it had 88 percent charge and although the weather has been cloudy and rainy with only a few hours of sunshine in total for the last week, the camera is at 94 percent today. At some point last week it was at 97%. ███Warranty Procedures:I went through warranty procedures for the solar panel unit and assuming the same procedure would apply for the cameras and the main unit, here is how it worked. I called Netgear support at 408 638 3750 and explained that my solar panel worked only for a couple of days and it died. The support representative was easy to work with, she asked me for my Arlo account email address, the serial number of the device and registered the product under my name for which I got an email. I explained that I can charge the camera without a problem with the regular charger and she did not ask for further troubleshooting steps. The phone call lasted about 10 minutes where she created an RMA and gave me the following three options to send me a replacement.1) Standard Swap Exchange: I pay to ship back the solar panel and they send me a new one when they receive my old one.2) Advanced Ground: I pay them $16.50 and they ship a new one with a label for the old one that they have to receive within 10 days otherwise they charge me for the new one.3) Advanced Next Business Day: I pay $29.99 to have it shipped with the same terms of option 2 but faster.I selected option 2 and I received the replacement solar panel 3 business days later while I was getting shipment notifications via email and was aware that it was on its way. I am not sure if they sent me a new or refurbished solar panel. It looks new but the wire was already plugged in and the one I originally purchased did not have the wire plugged in but other than that it came in a sealed box with all the parts.Pros:-They are wireless and depending on the traffic that you are recording, you may not need to charge the batteries more than once a month.-Cameras have both a magnetic and a 1/4 screw mount option which makes them easy to mount almost anywhere.-Recordings are saved on Netgear's website so you do not worry that a thief will also take your DVR with the recordings.-You get a notification on your phone as soon as motion is detected.-Cameras record sound and you can also talk through the camera build in speaker by using your phone or computer.-Cameras can be set up for motion detection on a specific region of the viewing area but you have to have the camera plugged in 24/7 or you can use the default setting. I found that the default setting works well because it does not get triggered by street traffic that is caught at the upper 5% of the viewing frame on mine. Yet if someone enters the driveway, I get a notification.-You can add multiple users by just inviting them and after they download the app and create a Netgear account, they can see the cameras you have allowed them to see. You can also add multiple camera security systems from various locations to your Netgear account and be able to manage them all from the app.-The app is very well made and maintained and you can do everything from it. If you prefer to use a browser, you can do so but it needs Flash so you will be better off using Internet ExplorerCons:-They have a very wide viewing angle (130 degrees) and that is borderline to a fish-eye lens which makes detail hard to view even though they are 1080P. If Netgear offered versions of the cameras with 60 or 80 degree lenses, I would love to have a couple of those cameras too in order to easily identify license plates and faces at greater distance. Also the 130 degree angle gives a curved image at the edges and that means that you may not have useful footage unless you overlap 2 cameras by about 15% and a less wide angle may have been more useful anyway.-They only record a short clip when motion is detected. This means that if you come in and out of the frame within a few seconds, it creates 2 recordings instead of one. For example, If I get in my car in the morning put on my seat belt and then realized I forgot something take of my seat belt immediately and get out of the car, the cameras will record 2 separate clips. One of me getting to the car and one getting out of the car.-Because the recordings stop immediately after motion has stopped, also means that you get many notifications on your phone or email for the same event and that is annoying.-The fact that you need to charge them every month means that you will want to install them low so you don't have to get a ladder every time you need to charge them. Installing them low means that anyone wearing a mask can steal these expensive cameras.-You can download the clips from the website or in your phone but there is no video time stamp so handing them over to the police like I had to do many times with my old cameras, will not be very helpful for their case if timing is critical. The only time stamp you get is when you are viewing the clips directly from their website or in the app. Once downloaded, that information is nowhere to be found.-Although you can easily install a USB hard drive and set it up to keep recording by deleting old recordings when full, the recordings in the hard drive will not be synchronized with Netgear's website if there is an Internet Service interruption. This is a pain because the app does not give you the means to view footage from the hard drive and you will have to disconnect it and connect it to a computer to see what is recorded. All the app can tell you is how much space is remaining.-There is a siren feature that is fairly useless because it only generates an alarm sound from the main unit and not from the camera's speakers. A thief will be more amused than scared when he/she hears the faint alarm sound coming from a locked house. If the thief has already entered your home or business, you would call the police and not want to warn him/her that they are coming by sounding off an alarm. In conclusion, this may be a four or five star item for people that have never had cameras before but I give it 3 stars for the fact that it is recording very short clips and most importantly it does not have the time and date stamp in the video frame which is very important especially if you need to "stitch" some of these clips together to present a sequence of events to law enforcement. I do understand that it records very short clips to preserve battery but I think that there should be an option to select how many seconds it should keep recording after motion is no longer detected.███ Note: Some features like setting specific regions in the viewing area to trigger motion detection, require the camera to be plugged in. Some other features, like 24/7 recordings require that you have the camera plugged in and a paid subscription. Features that require the camera to be plugged in will not work with the solar panel. This review is based on the free subscription. In my case the non paid (basic) subscription has adequate features and recording retention time (7 days of unlimited recordings). Some people gave feedback (Thank you!!!) in the comments saying that they can adjust the recording length from the "Mode" menu settings but the setting they are referring to is not to extend the recording time after motion has ended but rather to set a predefined length of time of the recording when motion is detected. In that mode, the recording will be the time you set even if motion is being detected continuously and multiple files will be created of the same length until motion stops. This also means that you will be getting the same amount of notifications as the number of files created. I tried to use this setting but it makes matters worse as far as generating multiple notifications and multiple video files for the same event. ███

Bad Camera & Bad Customer Service!
Purchased two units approx. 6months ago. After about 4 months both cameras needed to be charged. One of the cameras charged fine but the other would not charge at all. I called Arlo customer support (which I don't believe is in the US) and they had me switch the battery in the one that camera that charged into the other camera and it still didn't work. Arlo then transferred me to 2nd level support who logged on my computer remotely (which I regret now) and said that my wifi was compromised and wanted to charge me $99.00 to fix. When asked why the other camera is working fine they said it was just a matter of time before it stopped working as well I have spoken people who have verified that this doesn't sound right. So for the last two months I have one camera that works fine and the other is dead.

Live feed is delayed by approx. 30-60 seconds and laggy - useless!
I’d read all the usual tech website reviews on this before buying, and was expecting an amazing product. Everything was easy to set up and I had all 3 cameras up and running in about 15 minutes. I started testing them out by looking at the live feed, and was presented with crazy lag/delays. Crossed my fingers that it was just a one off starting glitch, so restarted the base station and checked on the forums. There are so many complaints from other customers about this!!! Apparently it used to work great until Netgear screed it up with an firmware update early this year, and they’ve never bothered to fix it. Don’t be like the people on the forums left with a $600 product that only half works - look elsewhere or until you at least see/read Netgear finally bothered to fix it for all their customers. Happy I returned this quickly for a full refund.

Pros & Cons $$$$
Expensive. Great product overall but the motion detection sucks and misses a lot. If you want it on 24/7 it will cost you 20 bucks per camera per month. This also means you will need outdoor power cables sold separately which have been sold out on amazon for months now as well as everywhere else.Pros:great video qualityDecent soundWirelessApp is user friendlyCons:$$$Customer service is limitedMotion detection is limitedMust recharge each cam without direct hook up but they only provide you with one charging cableOutdoor cables are not availableOutdoor cables go for $40-100 per unit when and if the do come back in stock I have been checking for months and asked ArloTo have 24/7 record you must pay a subscription per camera of $20 per monthWhen you pay $20 per camera and go through the feed, if you need to keep footage from it they don’t currently offer the capacity or option to save clips you choose from the feed. They only let you save the clips that are auto detected and often they cut off at the worst time.Hope this helps customers in the market. It is a big purchase.
