Q: Are these safe to put directly into a pot, adjacent to the plant? I wonder whether they leach anything or corrode in the soil or bark.

These are a pretty standard style for plant id. Believe they aluminum. I tuck mine into the pot as well as hang on the plant itself with the included wire. I think they are great.

Q: What do you put the tag on when writing on it with a ballpoint pen - something soft?

I use a clipboard. Clip the end to keep tag from moving and print or write. I found a firm surface best. A paper clamp will work. Firm is better than soft because the tag has a soft middle already to absorb the writing so you can write on both sides.

Q: Will these tags work as cheaper alternative to hand stamped metal for keepsake lockets or key chains?

Perhaps- in benign environments, like indoors.

Q: Do these come with anything to attach the tags to in order to place in the garden?

yes, they have long thin wires that go through holes on the tags and can be attached to the plant itself or that you can attach to a stick or other such item that you would then place in the ground.
