Not quite as rugged as earlier models - a GREAT product became a piece of junk!
I have owned several of these, going all the way back to when they were built in a stainless steel case, very heavy and solid. The newer ones seem much less "tough". The one I currently have dispenses the towel just fine to any length, but then the cut ends with a very loud "stripped gears" plastic horrible sound.I went ahead and gave it a 4 because, though it's not as good as the solid stainless steel model I had, and I had trouble with this one, the customer service people were friendly and promised to send me out a new one "tomorrow".UPDATE - Never received a new one, and when I called back to inquire, I was told "we don't sell those anymore".We'll see if that happens. :)=====================================================UPDATE - Jan 2018 - changing to 1 star --- would change to ZERO stars if possible! This unit always had a little "clicky" sound at the end of the cutting process. It grew progressively louder, and finally the unit just started making a horrible grinding sound at the end of the cutting process.I called the number from the Clean Cut website, which is actually a sub-menu of a different website now, and was told they would send out a new one. I was a bit suspicious, as the guy didn't even ask for a serial number of date of purchase or anything. After a couple weeks without receiving the unit, I called again today. They told me "nobody from our company would have told you that - Clean Cut is out of business.

We really like this dispenser, but received a defective unit.
We ordered a replacement for an identical dispenser that we've been using for several years. The old dispenser was still working, but the paper feed motor began to sound a little weak. We really like the convenience of this dispenser, so we ordered the replacement as a spare in case our old unit fails completely.Unfortunately, the new dispenser made a loud grinding noise at the end of the cutting process. The paper would be cut properly just the way it should be, but each time we pulled the paper out of the dispenser there was a loud grinding noise. It did not feel as if the paper was binding or having any other problem, but each time the paper was pulled out there was this loud grinding noise as if the paper cutter was having trouble moving back to it's proper position. Very odd. We're not sure there was an actual defect, but it sure sounded bad and we did not want to take a chance. We like this cutter so much that we're planning to order another unit with the hope that it will work properly without the loud noise.

Great idea but reliability may not be so good
This is a gadget that was a must buy when I saw it. But, then again im a gadget nut. Ask my significant other. She, truly that maybe this might be a good idea for a change. It was until it broke. Anyway, when I pulled it out of the carton, the dispensers finish was very nice in stainless steel and appears durable. You load most sizes of a paper towel roll by pulling on a latch on the front. Installation is relatively easy especially if mounting to bottom of wood cabinets. There are spacers included to handle different cabinet bottom surfaces. There is a nice template included. The hardware is good quality. Power is supplied by a ac adapter. Like most installations things usually go wrong, as did mine. I finally, hung a shelf in the kitchen and attached the dispenser to the bottom. The bottom of my cabinets had deep recesses and very thin bottom boards, so the free hanging shelf worked out better. The dispenser works by you placing your hand up to the right side sensors. This starts the paper rolling. When it gets to the desired length, you move your hand to the left side photocell and the dispenser swiftly cuts the paper towel. Actually, a Loy better then the usual pull and tear. Unfortunately, I ran into an issue. After several months of use, the dispenser's functions went nuts. When rolling the towel, the dispenser would immediately also cut the paper. The result was 1" wide pieces of paper. The two photocell operations occurred when activating the right sensor. The device also was initially affected by the ambient light in the kitchen. If you luck out and get a good dispenser, buy it.your wife will love it. And, if you have dirty hands, it great. You can get fresh towels without soiling the roll. Just be aware the reliability may be questionable.

This should be in public bathrooms, too
This is as good as the other five-star reviews say. Once set up, you just put a hand in the right side space and, for however long you want the paper towel, you leave your hand there. Just a brief moment gives you a few inches, enough for most minor cleanups without wasting the rest of the sheet as with "roll your own". I no longer need to shop for the short sheet rolls of paper towels -- any roll will do.After the sheet advances, you insert your hand in the left section and it cuts the sheet. However, I originally thought, will the sheet fall down after the cut. No. It stays in place and you just lift it away. I don't know what's keeping it from falling, but it is so well thought out. This was a great find.So think about how public bathrooms now give you automatic (without touch) hand dryers, sink starters, and sometimes soap dispensers. But I have yet to see one of these automatic paper towel dispensers. It would close the loop on touchless.I recently bought an automatic soap dispenser, so between that and this (I don't care about the automatic water on), it's a touchless bathroom. But here's another thought. I have a regular towel in the bathroom, and that is used most of the time. So why, you ask, do you need the paper towels there? Well, if I'm going to, for example, wash windows and use paper towels, I can just grab several cut sheets from this dispenser, cut to the length I need, and do the chore. This is where I see the biggest benefit. This is better than constantly needing to grab a roll and rip a sheet off while I'm doing the job.Bottom line, this was well worth the $100+.
