A Fun Nerdy Guilty Pleasure
I was a nerd in high school. I still am, but now being a nerd is cool, and I get paid well to be one. Back then, not so much. So this movie is a really fun guilty pleasure for me. Qualls is great as the nerdy outcast (a blip, as they're called in the movie, as they're "barely on the radar"), and casting Lyle Lovett as his dad was brilliance. A solid cast with lots of fun music industry cameos, and Eddie Griffin as the narrator/Yoda in one of his funniest roles other than Undercover Brother. Is it Oscar worthy? Of course not. It's goofy, and features a lot of improbable scenes. But it didn't set out to be fine cinema, it set out to be fun, and it succeeded very well.I have mixed feelings about the theatrical vs. director's cut. The DC includes plot elements that do add to the movie, but there are a couple of scenes that are switched out between the two where I think the one in the theatrical version actually works better (specifically, Patton vs Braveheart... Patton works well, and Braveheart is done again late in the film, so switching it out keeps things fresh). My dream version would be the DC with the Patton scene instead of the Braveheart scene, but alas, that isn't available. If I had to choose one I'd go with the DC, simply because there are those actually significant plot elements that are included there. For those who saw this in the theaters (best I can tell me and three other people) neither home version has the completely unmodified theater version. For some reason, at least one small cut was made in the swimsuit scene, and I've never heard why. I thought it was all in my head until someone else asked about it too. But it is a minor change, and doesn't affect the plot.

TRULY WEIRD but funny
This may not be for everyone. story is about a nerd who ends up meeting a guy at the local jail who will explain to him how to be cool after he transfers into a new school. So the guy goes there and is cool, but his past may come back to haunt him.Movie is self-aware, so there is a scene where Eliza Dushku models a few binkinis and then it cuts back to the narrator telling the story and he says "Hey, I've been in jail a long time!" as a way to excuse the fact she models three or four binkinis and does a little sexy posing. Nothing graphic but a bit gratuitous and so the narrator justifies it by mentioning his jail time as if that is why the shots are in the narrative. If that does not strike you as funny, maybe you will not find the movie funny. People ranging from David Hasslehoff to Skateboarder Tony Hawk make odd appearances in the movie. The prison guards seem to be willing to help out the kid by delivering him to his new high school in a scene that recalls Silence of the Lambs. All good, light silly fun. It's one of those ones you will enjoy or shake your head and wonder why some people think it is funny.

Funniest movie of all time
This movie is so original and funny that none other can compare the story line is great for what it is which is a cheesy high-school sorta Rom-com. If you havent seen it and like stuff like this you should watch it. It's not really kids appropriate though.

Excellent film but you really don't need the director's cut
I've always loved this film, a few years ago somebody stole it and I had to replace it so I decided why not let's get the director's cut. You really do not need to spend more money and get the directors cut, it is barely different at all. There's one or two tiny extended scenes and that's about it. It makes the home life part between him and his dad make a tiny bit more sense, but it's really not necessary it's worth a one-time watch. Compared to buying just the movie in any respect. The movie itself is watchable over and over again it's just the extra money for the director's cut that's not worth it. Also why in the actual F*** has this movie not been released on Blu-ray yet I mean come on.

Star Studded Laugh Out Loud Fun!!
This was the funniest coming of age movie I've seen with my coming of age son yet!! I may be old but I'm not dead so I got it. I actually remember those days oh so well and how awkward it was, to say the least. My son and I were laughing ourselves to tears! I told him not to, under any circumstances, take advice from this movie. He knows that this means he should do exactly what Dizzy does!! LMAO!! And, before you say anything, yes, I am the cool mom who is so funky and rad and groovy that my kids actually do enjoy hanging out with me. Although my older kids keep saying it is time to grow up!! Why should I?? I'll always be just like Dizzy!! LMAO!! Oh, and as for the guy passed out with the amazing abs?? OMG!! The best and most inspiring part of the movie!!

Appalling
I managed to sit through 20 minutes of this before switching off and throwing it out. I know thre is not a problem with the actors in it as I've seen most of them perform brilliantly elsewhere, so clearly the story and direction are at fault. It just doesn't work and was not in the least bit funny. My verdict - avoid!

The New Guy - how good comedy should be done
For anyone who hasn't seen this-why haven't you?!!! It's a contender for the funniest movie ever. DJ Qualls- a sadly underrated and underutilised actor- re-invents himself when he changes high schools, going from perrenial victim to the coolest new kid in town with a little help by his cell mate Luther (that'll make sense when you see it, ha ha)wonderfully portrayed by Eddie Griffin, who also tells the story. With his cool new image and attitude, Gil Harris (Qualls) soon meets up with hottie Danielle the cheerleader, played by the stunningly gorgeous Eliza Dushku who is fascinated by the newcomer. Is he all he seems? Could this kid with the crazy eyes and bad boy rep really be all that? Along side Qualls are his funk band and a superb supporting cast, including memorable performances by the likes of Zooey Deschanel, Lyle Lovett as Qualls father and a cameo from the monster of rock himself, Gene Simmons (can I get an amen? Once again, you have to see it to understand that...)This is quite simply a laugh out loud comedy with characters everyone can relate to in one way or another.

A very funny movie that deserves to be watched
This i a very funny movie. Its different at least from other comedies. This is a teen college comedy that tries to make things exiting. Eliza Dushku gives this movie a bit more spice with her great positivity on screen. She is beautiful to say the least. Averall a good movie that deserves to be watched.
