The switch is located within the cord and near the end of the cord - near the plug. The switch is the kind you use your thumb to roll up or down to turn on & off. Hope this made sense and helps!

Q: Does this lamp really need to be installed by a professional? Doesn't it just hang on a hook in the ceiling?

You don't need a professional unless you connect the wire kit to the ceiling. The wire kit is optional. I hung it on a hook from the ceiling, then draped the swag chain hanging it on another hook in the corner of the ceiling, and plugged it into an outlet. Easy and beautiful.

Q: what bulb does it take and how many?

I think it was only one bulb but I can't tell you the size. It was a gift for a teenaged granddaughter and I don't have it here. She loves it.
