What’s the best way to wash it?

The best way I have found is a light soapy sponge and rinse. Air dry. Haven't considered washing machine.

The person used it is 5’2” and she loved it.

Does United Airlines or Lufthansa airlines allow this

We just flew on United from Hawaii to California and back and they allowed it on both flights.
