What's the difference between this model and the older model?

Not familiar with the older model but so far on four outings for a total of 22 boxes it has held it's shape and holds the box of shells firmly yet the box is still easily extracted. It is well constructed. My 2.5 inch web belt feeds through and the pouch slides easily on it.

Can you dump the ammo box into the pouch? Instead of having the box sitting in it?

Actually no. I tried it and there are slits in each bottom corner that allow shells to drop out. Just leave the shells in the box, fold back the top and sides and slide the whole box in. Works great for trap in that you don't have to keep count of rounds fired from a jumbled bunch. Just use one layer (5 rounds) and then advance stations.

How many 12 gauge shells will this fit loose? As in not in a box

It is designed for one box of 25 shells. They will fall out if you try to carry them loose not in the box. You would be better served with a pouch if you want to carry them loose. It's best application is for a round of trap which is 25 shells.....
