If I remember correctly it's vacuum sealed until you used it with a bit of solution. We were a bit nervous expecting it, but it's not bad. Even after she dissected it, it stayed on her desk in pieces (insides thrown away obviously) for a day or two before she finally threw it away. It was definitely presses erred so well there was no odor at all. Good Luck, having never done it in school it was easier than I thought it would be. My daughter was in either 4th or 5th grade and loved it!!!

Many specimens can be stored for years under the right conditions. If you plan to store yours for more than a year or to use them over an extended period of time after opening, we recommend that you purchase pail-packed specimens. Because they are immersed in preservative fluid, they remain in good condition longer.
