The bottom edge of the bell that holds the butter and sits in the water, is it glazed or unfinished?

It is glazed and co.pletely sealed. The butter is held in the bell by pressing the butter stick into the bell and pushing out all the air. Also the water keeps the butter fresh and holds it in the bell. It washes clean very well.

How do you clean the bell and how frequently do you clean ut?

Just wash it like you would a ceramic coffee mug. I wash mine and put fresh water in it everytime I add another stick of butter.
