First love in anyone’s life holds a special place especially if the memory is filled with the vibrant musings of the city that you grew up in. Benaras holds a special place in Kundans heart, because not only did he grow up as a typical, god fearing, shiv bhakt-Pandit but also because it was the city that gave him Zoya. Quiet, beautiful with mischievous eyes, Zoya was the girl of his dreams. He would follow her everyday to the bazaar, back to her house till one day he mustered the courage to speak to her and tell her his true feelings - his 13year old heart, smitten by her simplicity. She of course didn't takes him seriously and brushed him off. Time passed by and Zoya moved to Delhi to study further. Love they say is a feeling that only grows stronger with time and Kundan’s love for Zoya never diminished, he carried his feeling all through college and his heart flipped when Zoya came back to his town. With Zoya back in Benaras, Kundans world was filled with excitement as he was thinking of finally telling her how he felt. But she was in love with Akram, a college friend from DU and he was the love of her life and she wanted Kundan’s help in marrying him. He was torn between his true feelings for Zoya and his hearts pleas to help her get her true love because who could understand that pain better than him. He sets out to unite her with Akram and what follows is a tale of Love, betrayal, redemption and healing set against the very rooted town of Benaras and the upbeat political environs of Delhi. Ranjhana is the story of Kundan, his journey from a 13 year old boy in love who goes on to become a committed, spirited young man, who’s experiences in life made him the person he is today. It’s the STORY OF LOVE!!

An Indian Love Story
What is a Bollywood film without a love story? Raanjhanaa not only boasts one, but also intertwines the subculture, caste system, religion, politics of India into one colorful film. As someone who has come to appreciate Hollywood, I had to realize that this movie is made for Indians and not compare it with other western movies under the same light. So long I have waited for a movie, for an Indian movie to come close to reality, an Indian reality... as opposed to the upper class fantastical type Indian movies. This one sure does come close as one can without sacrificing the appeal of Indian cinema. I can understand its success as associations can be made between this movie and reality for Indians. Glad to own my first Bollywood film.A. R. Rahman does a fantastic job in first two tracks: "Tum Tak" and "Raanjhanaa" but rest of the tracks felt very mediocre, especially coming from such an acclaimed producer.Blu-ray boasts high definition and HD audio but there are no special features. The blu-ray I recieved was for all regions.

An Anti-Love Story with some absolutely beautiful songs.
A visually beautiful movie. What seems to start off as a predictable love story takes off on a dark trajectory involving religion and politics. The songs (by A.R. Rahman) are beautiful and are also atypically placed as supporting the scenes as opposed to having the characters singing them. The young stars do a wonderful job.

interesting
Not a typical Indian movie- but the main character is awesome! the movie was sad... my mom and I were like WTH at the end of it, but i guess it is good, Bollywood is not steering into having depressing endings to!

Not Bad But..
The lead male character was inappropriate for this role. Dhanush is anything but a romantic type. I also had difficulty understanding some of his dialogues. And, the story started out nicely as a guy infatuated by a girl but then it drifted into kamikaze political drama

Good Story
Watched this movie on an airline flight. Liked it so much I decided to buy the DVD to share with my wife. Good dance sequences and storyline. Acting is good and now I am open to watching other Bollywood movies.Arrived quickly, even though I used free normal shipping.

Too Depressing
I'm not a fan of dying/suicide because of unrequited love. Death is easy & weak...living takes courage & strength! Besides, I never liked either of the main characters throughout the entire movie, so didn't care what happened to them. This is probably the only Bollywood movie I won't be re-watching or keeping!
