Is it open at the bottom?

No. It has a front center zipper. The bottom has extra fabric to there’s plenty of room to wiggle and stay covered/warm. I felt the sleeves are a little snug.

is there a cotton version of this?

If you read the description it tells you what the fabric is. This was a gift for my grandson and I don't recall if the fabric was cotton, a blend, or fleece.
