do these dry to a permanent finish?

If you use them with water there shouldn't be a problem (since you can fix chalk pastels with water anyhow). But if you use them dry they would be like any other soft pastel and would require a fixative.

Is the box ok to carry in the field?

It’s a moderately sturdy box but I’d place it inside something else as well. Bring a brush as you can also wet the brush and gather pigment from the stick. It’s a fun set.

are these oil pastels?

No. They are hard pastel not oil based. Similar to NuPastels.

What colors are in this set?

The set does not have color names; only color numbers. Numbers are on the bottom of the box and are as follows: 102, 210, 215, 216, 227, 676, 301, 219, 305, 434, 430, 317, 324, 302, 335, 336, 336, 315, 559, 568, 503, 569, 517, 505, 570, 459, 445, 445, 443, 455, 452, 453, 601, 600, 692, 684, 681, 693, 688, 687, 689, 793, 786, 795, 797, 576, 694, 691. Please notice that there are two typo's on the box as 336 and 445 are both listed twice for 2 different shades. With the color numbers on the box are also listed the lightfast ratings. It really is a nice range of colors.
