To Oil or Not to Oil?
Obviously there are a lot of fun, interesting things that can be made using this pan. After reviewing orhers' comments, I wondered if the pan works best with oil or without (since it's a non-stick pan) so I ran an experiment. In one row of the top and bottom pan I sprayed a heavy coating of Pam Olive Oil spray. I left the other row as is. I used Pillsbury Devil's Food cake mix, baked in an electric oven for 20 minutes, cooled in pan for 8 minutes, then removed. To keep things as equal as possible I first baked the pans side by side (oiled rows next to each other) on the same center rack. After 10 minutes I reversed the pans so oiled rows were now near the sides of the oven for the remaining 10 minutes. After 8 minutes of cooling I gave each pan one quick shake; the cakes in the oiled rows came out on their own so cleanly I could have stored the pan without washing it. The other rows required some effort to remove the cakes. Pictures below.I have never found a baking pan that was truly non-stick. In fact, most will tell you to lightly grease the pan - which I do. Given the fragile nature of these little cakes, particularly the bottom cakes, I used more cooking spray than I typically would and the results were perfect.Despite the messiness of the ungreased rows the pan cleaned up very quick and easily. And that's really what a non-stick surface does best.I am going to try this pan with things other than cake batter. It has inspired me!Happy baking everyone!

Two successes & counting!
Rich, frosted cakes are for birthdays and other special occasions in our house, but I did get to try a couple of "off-label" trials. First, I bought a box of pound cake mix, the size that makes one loaf pan of cake, and followed the mixing directions. I sprayed the inside of the pan that has the indentations with baking spray, filled each cake pan 3/4 full, then baked according to the directions on the box, but shortened the time to about 15 minutes. I did not use the other side that does not have indentations. After a ten-minute cooling in the pan, I flipped them onto a cooling rack. Later, for a special dessert, I over filled each indentation with sliced strawberries, then covered each one with lots of whipped cream. Wow, yummy strawberry shortcake, and so easy.Okay, here's another "off-label" trial. I mixed up about a pound of ground turkey with other ingredients to make a turkey loaf. I sprayed each indented pan then filled each one, dividing the mixture evenly. I baked these at 350 degrees for about 20 minutes, turned them onto a board with a drip trough, then placed two of the mini turkey loaves on each of four plates. I filled each indentation with roasted vegetables, squash, carrots, whatever, then spooned a seasoned tomato sauce over each plate. A variation would be to use two pounds of meatloaf mixture and divide among the indentations in both pans. Then, spoon the roasted vegetables into the indentation and top with the plain-sided meatloaf and serve one per plate. The experiments worked very well in the Fillables 2 Piece Mini Loaf Pan set. The pans themselves are decent weight carbon steel, coated with a non-stick coating. I almost always spray every pan I bake in for insurance - can't hurt. Our house is very pleased with these new pans.

Not much space for filling
I was excited to try these pans and had many ideas for desserts. Boston Cream Pie, Strawberry Shortcake, Individual Baked Alaska and Lemon Meringue “Pie.I decided to start with Boston Cream Pie using my favorite recipe and I used some of the leftover cakes for Strawberry Shortcake. They do include two cake recipes with the instructions with instructions for making from scratch or with a cake mix.The pans are substantial heavyweight “non-stick” coated steel. I would not really consider these non-stick. I prepped the pan as I do with my other non-stick bake ware; brushing with melted butter. Release wasn’t too much an issue with the tops but the bottoms were very difficult to remove in one piece; I had to gently pry them out of the pan. I wasn’t able to get all of them out without some damage to the cakes. I would definitely prep these with butter AND flour in the future. Otherwise the cake did bake and brown nicely.I was disappointed to find the depression for the filling is only about 1/4” deep; it doesn’t allow for a nice proportion of filling to cake. The cakes are 3-1/2” long and 2-1/2” wide. The area for filling is 2-3/4” x 1-1/2”. Without filling the top and bottom together are 2” high.I had planned on using the pans more than once before reviewing but after the initial fight with getting the cakes out of the pan and the shallow filling allowance I was not inspired to try it again, yet. It remains to be seen if these pans are worthy of a place in my cupboards or another specialty pan I will rarely use.
