"This is called a trap. And I'm calling you dead."
This is one of the new Star Wars Legends Epic Collection TPBs in the line of Marvel’s Dark Horse reprints. This is the first volume of the New Republic books. This first TPB collects Mara Jade – By the Emperor’s Hand #0-6, Star Wars Tales #1, 15, 10, 5, Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire – Evolution #1-5, Star Wars: The Jabba Tape, Star Wars Tales #4, 3, 14, and 22, Boba Fett: Twin Engines of Destruction, and Star Wars Tales #10 and #20 in that order. The first story is about Mara Jade and introduces her background as the Emperor’s Hand and her quest to take down Black Nebula. The plot was written by Timothy Zahn so you know it was done well. The first Tales story is also a Mara Jade story when she was hunting down a target. The next two are short stories about Luke and the droids immediately after the destruction of the second Death Star.Star Wars Tales #5 has the adventures of Lando after the Death Star battle as he’s still helping the Rebels in the Millennium Falcon. Next are the five Shadows of the Empire – Evolution issues. These stories actually involve Luke and the gang a bit and entail them trying to find a human replica droid named Guri before the remnants of Black Sun get a hold of her. The art here is really good and the writing works well if you don’t know the Shadows of the Empire story but knowing it beforehand makes the story a tad bit better; especially the ending. The Jabba Tape follows with a tale of Swoop bikers trying to take what they can after Jabba’s death. However, they’ll have to battle with a member of the Hutt clan to make out with their bounty! Tales #4 takes place directly after the Jabba Tapes and has the bikers having to take down an Imperial Dark Trooper droid!Tales #3 takes a look at the life of a Gamorrean Guard after the death of Jabba the Hutt. Tales #14 moves into an Imperial tale of how exactly a bunch of cute Ewoks defeated the Empire on the forest moon of Endor. Boba Fett: Twin Engines of Destruction has the bounty hunter hunting down an imposter named Jodo Kast who is cashing in on Fett’s fame. Another story from Star Wars Tale #10 has Chewbacca jealous that Han is always hanging out with Leia instead of him now! Then in Tales #20, the book finishes off with a funny issue where Han hires some computer tech help from Endor. All in all, this feels a bit mish-mashed. Some of the stories are excellent like Mara Jade and Twin Engines of Destruction. However, they’re interspersed with all these Tales stories that are “cartoony” and provide no real story insight. Just a bunch of goofy one-off tales with poor art. The last one in the book has art akin to a newspaper comic. Shadows of the Empire: Evolution was a neat inclusion as well with great art but it still doesn’t make up for being taken out of the story by these Tales issues. Grab this book if you want to find out what everyone was up to after the second Death Star was destroyed. Otherwise, this book is entirely skippable.

Star Wars Legends Epic Collection: The New Republic
This is a collection of Dark Horse Comics that are being republished by Marvel now that they have the license back. This is near Omnibus status, 440 some odd pages of pure Star Wars comics circa the middle to late 90's, very heavy on Mara Jade stories so don't expect to see too much Han, Luke or Leia, but they are in a decent amount of the issues collected here. I like the inclusion of the original comic's covers as well. Any fan of Dark Horse's run of Star Wars comics should grab this since they're out of print from Dark Horse now. I'm hoping Marvel will reissue some of Dark Horse's run on Star Wars Tales or Clone Wars. Luckily here we get some Shadow's of the Empire issues and they're releasing volumes of the Old Republic. I know people will want the Thrawn trilogy and Dark Empire, those go for big money now that they're out of print. I'm glad that these are being produced and at a reasonable price with tons of content per volume, thanks Marvel. FULLY APPROVED.

A Great Christmas Gift
My brother-in-law is a huge Star Wars fan and used to animate when he was at Art School. Have only giving this a quick look through because it is a gift, but it is absolutely beautiful. It came in great condition and very quickly. Very happy.

Some good stories, mostly mediocre.
The Mara Jade and Guri story lines are good (but not great). The rest is a mish-mash of random single or double issue stories that are mediocre at best.

A Mixed Bag of Stories
This graphic novel collects various different comics set soon after the Battle of Endor. Some, "Mara Made By The Emperor's Hand" and "Boba Fett Twin Engines of Destruction" are very good , whilst others range from bad to average to good. Also, this graphic novel contains a few sequels to "Shadows of the Empire", which whilst good, could be confusing if (like me) you have not previously read that. However, I would still recommend if you want to experience some comics from the New Republic era.
