Scarlet Runner is a trailing bean (Phaseolus coccineus) with ornamental and edible uses. Vines form large scarlet blossoms attractive to hummingbirds and long, green pods that can reach up to 10-14 inches. This species differs from the pole/bush bean (Phaseolus vulgaris): the plant is a perennial and will overwinter in warmer climates; it also produces large nitrogen0fixing tubers. Young pods can be eaten raw or cooked, and mature dried beans can be used the same as any other bush bean. 45-55 days from seed to small pod production. Perennial (although typically grown as an annual in colder winter climates).
