will it work in the ceiling of a home closet to keep the hat safe?

I don't know about a ceiling. I keep mine attached to the inside of my car and it keeps my hat from being crushed and damaged.

Can this be wall mounted?

My mistake. I thought I was reviewing another hat rack. This spring loaded unit should mount in the closet, maybe using wall anchors.
