Q: Reviewer said thick slings might not work. How thick is too thick?

The inside diameter (top to bottom) of the slot in one of my swivels is .245" so as long as the sling is less than .245-.240" thick it should work fine. Note: this is only a sample of one and the measurements may vary depending on how close they keep the tolerances during manufacturing.

Q: Will these fit the savage hog hunter rifle

As long as the rifle comes with sling studs, which it appears that the hog hunter does, it will work. Just make sure you get the appropriate width swivels for your sling, usually 1" or 1.25"
