Q: What is the average download speed for this device?

It isn't specific based on the device. It depends on where I am at in relation to the nearest Verizon tower, how strong that signal is when connecting to my device and usage from other subscribers connected in my area. That said, I just ran a speed test in Somerset, KY connected with 4 bars and I got an average of 5.6 Mbps down and 4.9 Mbps up. There's no way to guarantee you would receive the same speed though.

this is a monthly plan device.great idea to buy your own. also you should ask Verizon about this device before purchase.

I was told this one so I got it. Kind of think my original from 3 years ago worked just as good. Where I live I use it as my main Internet for all my devices so this one can run more at same time. But the range from device is shorter then old one. Overall it works pretty well. But the strength is not any more powerful then your cell service.

Bars alone are not really an indicator of reliability or speed. If you are with Verizon, I can tell you for a fact that it is faster and more reliable than using your phone. When I bought mine, the Verizon rep relayed that to me, saying that phone data is throttled to a certain extent while Jetpack data is not. However, I was skeptical, thinking she was only trying to make a sale. Surprisingly, she was correct. Additionally, the battery life on this thing is extraordinary. Even at 2 bars, you'll have better results with the Jetpack than your phone. I can't speak for other carriers, though.EditNumerous test have been done comparing hotspots to using a phone. The tests show that hotspots are more reliable and often faster than phones.
