Does this really create a protective film. ?

Yes, it really worked for me. I had mouth ulcers when I was in Lanzarote and this is where I first bought this from a Chemist. when I was going out to eat I used this stuff and it was excellent and I continued to use it every time I went for dinner. It was painful for a few seconds then went numb. When I got home I order it from Amazon incase I ever needed it again.. I have never had mouth ulcers again. So it definitely worked for me. Does this contain lidocaine or another numbing agent?

No. It stings when it goes on but it really does give relief after.
