Im cutting inch thick trim thats in place can i set the blade cutting depth?

To cut molding in place, you need to get a dremel type oscillating tool, which will cut very fine lines, and not leave a ragged edge. It will also do a straight plunge cut, which is quite helpful for cutting molding, in place. (I've done a bit of that work, myself, so I'm quite sure.) A jig saw drives the blade down (a lot), then pulls it back up, which will leave your moldings, and wall, beat to death, and it will wreck your wrist, as well, trying to hold it steady while it beats against the wall. You won't like the results, trust me. Dremel tools are pricey, but if you search, there are places with MUCH cheaper options, that work just as well (HF). Just go for the oscillating tool, and use the blades that have tiny teeth on just the front end, for a clean plunge cut. Jig saws are great, and have a purpose, and this one looks like a good tool, but it just won't do what you're hoping for. (And neither will a circular saw, unless it's a super tiny one, and you don't care about the rip out and end divots that will come with a circular saw, of any size.) Depending on how steady your hand is, and how few/small the cuts are, you could just try it with a rotary tool, which is super cheap. Get the off brand one, with a wand attachment, and for considerably less money than this, you could do some small detail work, with what basically is a sideways 1 inch circular saw attachment. Unfortunately, it is a hand held tiny saw blade, so if it's gonna show, and you care about straight lines, go to the oscillating tool. It will work the best of the three options. PS I know this question is old, and you've long since done the project, but for others who may want to know the answer, as well, I figured I'd answer, because I had the same problem a while back.

Does the saw take U-shank or T-shank blades?

Interesting question. I bought this saw and have yet to find on the box or the enclosed instructions exactly what saw blade to use with this saw. Seems Porter Cable would mention the blades somewhere. Of course every thing was made and printed in China.
