Will it take a 10MM rope

It is designed for 3 to 9 mm ropes. Imho, already a 9 mm rope would be too stiff to tighten. plus I see no real reason to put in a rope that thick. Anything this product can handle can also be handled by a 5-7 mm rope. And using a smaller diameter rope would add some flexibility to the tie-down, which makes more sense, than using heavy and too thick a rope. The matter is what you intend to use it for. I think that a rope that thick simply does not match the purpose of this product. I like to use it what it was designed for and it is very good at it. Don't use it for anything else. Can this be used with paracord?

If your paracord is within the minimum size range, then yes. I use 5mm paracord and it works.

Would this be any good for tightening a shade sail?

YES, however for windy conditions, you might need a shade sail which is made of flexible fabric, or you might need to tighten it by using also some kind of a rather strong, tight but still flexible elements (cords, rubber bands) at least on the half of the attaching points. Using a short rubber band dedicated for securing luggage in cars and doubling it, might be nice. Depends on the size of the sail. When (over)tightening any flexible cords or bands, be very careful, it might snap into your face/eyes. I actually know a guy who lost eyesight on one eye, when securing something on is cars roof-rack with a cheap Chinese rubber cord with hooks. You have to realise, that at anytime you are tightening something flexible, you may be storing a considerable amount of energy into something that can snap, releasing that energy very fast, thus very strong. This goes also for the Mite Ize CamJam XT Aluminium. The heavier is object attached to a snapped flexible cord or band, the more dangerous it gets. Do not over-tighten. Use eye protection in extreme cases, or at least turn face away and keep distance. Tighten in a direction perpendicular to your vision, never towards your face. A well chosen flexible element will prevent the sail shade from snapping in the winds and it will stop it from tearing itself, or tearing off, with a wind gust. The rope tighteners are great for many other purposes also.
