I would have to say not for very long. Maybe it may be more effective if it were placed next to the cat's box but you'll be buying another filter in about a week. The pressing question should be "how can I keep my house from smelling like a cat box"? As someone who's had two adult cats in a small apartment, without anyone realizing it, the trick is fresh litter twice per week (Waaay cheaper than a new filter), with some baking soda thrown in and good ventilation (a fan in a window, blowing out) throughout. Keep in mind however, if the litter box gets to you, imagine how it affects your cat(s). Even if you can't smell it, they certainly can and, if it gets to be too much for them, they may find other, unwanted, options. Fabreze (used sparingly) can help but if you don't keep the litter clean, it'll spell (smell) trouble. Here's an excellent option... if you have two bathrooms, dedicate one to training your cats to use the toilet. They can learn at any age, takes just a couple of weeks and is very easy to learn. A one bathroom place makes the job a lot harder, but not impossible. Training systems are very cheap compared to the endless filters you'll be shelling out for. One last thought: If it smells, you've waited too long to keep the odors away since, by then, the urine has sunk to the bottom of the box and a complete cleaning (which should be done every month anyway, if you have multiple cats, or about every two months for a single cat) will be needed.
