Why does it turn off at 50 degrees? Why not 33? It seems wasteful to heat when the temp is over freezing.

If it turned of at 33, it wouldn't keep melting the ice. If it were say in your rain gutter and the temp at the plug/outlet got to 33 degrees, it might still be 31 degrees and building up more ice. If it gets to 40 degrees, which is still below the safe temp to run a heat cable, you want it to keep running to melt as much of the ice as possible. long and short, if it turns off below 50 you run the risk of not melting the snow and ice properly and fully, which runs the risk of ice dams, which runs the risk of water in the house, which is expensive.

Below what temp does come on? It says off at 50 degrees.

Just above the male plug side mine says on @38 off @ 50
