I make top-quality biologically-assessed compost. Turning piles at the right temperature is critical for killing pathogens, maximum reproduction of beneficial organisms and preventing anaerobic conditions. This thermometer is the perfect and most essential tool to get the timing right. I use it daily. It's heavy duty, easy to read, easy to use. Highly recommended.

This is an amazingly well-built product and is very useful in composting to take accurate readings inside the windrows especially since it has a very long, sturdy probe. Been using this for a while now and it is very resilient and very accurate. Also bought the added "cage" that protects the meter and the glass somewhat. Am very pleased with the quality and the accuracy. The probe is nice and long too with a sharp end that easily penetrates the windrows to the desired depth or area being measured.

I've been composting now for over 40 years and using a thermometer for the last eight and it makes a tremendous difference especially as the weather cools off and goes into winter. I typically monitor the progress of 4-5 compost binds or piles all year and was looking for a longer and more rugged thermometer which could be calibrated to replace my Reotemp Home Compost Thermometer so I purchased the 24" Heavy Duty model and am extremely pleased. With the handle screwed on it makes insertion and removal a lot easier into tougher material and I'm not afraid I will bend the shaft as I had been with the home use one. The larger dial is easy to read and it's very well constructed. If you have a need for a more commercial and verifiable version for everyday use this is just a great tool. My older home Reotemp with the shorter probe is still working fine and will be relegated to a spare.

My composte bin is a series of 3 hardware cloth lined cedar frames, roughly 3’ cubed for aeration. Between this 48” REOTEMP and the LOTECH crank I can keep my composte at 160F without having to turn it. I use the crank and water twice a week. I could have purchased the shorter given my dimensions but this works great. I do recommend the Probe Guard and use my hand as a guide for insertion.

I received my thermometer with a 24" stem a couple days ago. My goodness, what a heavy-duty piece of equipment. The diameter of the stem is about the size of my pinky, and has a surprisingly sharp point. I had no trouble stabbing it into the center of a 3-foot compost pile and an equally tall bin full of wet, compressed leaves. I found that the dinky home composting thermometer that I have been using and that is already starting to rust after 6 months of use is off by more than 15 degrees. I appreciate the fact that the thermometer can be calibrated using an ice bath.This definitely is an expensive piece of kit. But if you appreciate well-made tools that should last a lifetime, this is a solid choice.

Double checked the calibration on receiving it. It worked for 4 probes then the needle popped off. Get a couple in case you are the middle of a cycle now I am in a jam.

Didn't like having to make an adapter that threads into 1/2 in pipe threads.For the price, that should be included.
