When workout, is there some article of clothing that should be worn under these? Or are these made to be the bottom layer?

I would consider these to be a base layer with shorts worn over them.

Do these shrink after washing or drying?

Mine didn’t. Although I used cool settings on both wash and dry. Almost wish they had, not the most “compressive” brand I’ve owned.

Based on the incremental changes in waist size, I believe 4xl would fit someone between 44 to 48

They run true to size. I am a 34 and used the Medium and they fit perfect. Here is what they recommend. Small Fit Waist 30-33.5" Hip 36-38" Inseam 6.5" Medium Fit Waist 32-35.5" Hip 38.5-41" Inseam 6.7"
