I needed a tamper for asphalt repair to driveway, and wanted a tool that would hold up for that, as well as any other earth tamping applications occasionally needed. . Estwing was selected for tool reputation, and that it was sturdier than most. I wanted a fixed length tamper because, in my 71 year old opinion, IF you're going to put the tool to work, and work it...most of the multi-piece units made from other manufacturers would seem to eventually wear and fail at the pop/pin points of extension lengths...although if you were in a confined space with limited height, they could have some usefulness.My first impression was not only was it shipped in a very timely manner, the packaging was marks above most anything else being received lately from Amazon, with their 'newer and better' packaging most have gone too...that's another subject...a sore one I must say. It wasn't that the Estwing tamper was in danger of being damaged in shipment...but if you take pride in your product, presentation should be a major concern. Not only was the finish on the product excellent, welds, painting, cushioned handle grip and design...the box, packing is a lesson other manufactures need to learn...One that Amazon would do well to consider....what if this workhorse of a tool had been packed the way most things we've received lately from Amazon? I can guarantee shipping would have "taken out" other shipped packages indiscriminately flimsy Amazon packages, competitor's packages and probably Grandma's China...So I respect Estwing and the supplier for their consideration in considerate packaging & shipping. I really wonder how Amazon's bottom line is being impacted by the damaged goods and returns, and dissatisfied customers...by the flimsy and, let's say it..."crappy" packaging they are trusting mine and your goods too in all too many cases?Overall, very satisfied. If there was a 10 Star--this product and shipping earned my respect and repeat business. If you need to whack it...Tamp it with this Estwing Tamper!

I purchased a tamper from Home Depot online and returned it due to it being made in China. Unfortunately Estwing is no longer manufacturing this tamper in the USA.The quality is good but for the higher price and made in India I would have purchased the Bully Tools tamper and 100% made in the USA at the same price as this one. Lame.

I wanted a sturdy, one-piece unit with strong welds and a thick handle, and that's exactly what I got! The large-diameter handle makes hands & forearms tire less quickly, and the smallish head area means more "whumping" force for the same amount of effort. It's on the shorter side, but that also is good--no sense doing the lifting of another 24" of steel. The powder finish means a clean release even from this sticky clay soil. This looks as if it'll last a long time.

Heavy duty and well constructed with a welded steel handle. This is a tool you will have the rest of your life! Added bonus: made in the USA!
