Flip Manufacturing 717-1550 Steering Sector Plate and Pinion Gear Replacement for MTD Troybilt

My mower went from a sloppy steering to like new. Excellent.

It is a good kit, but lacks the bearing for the steering column which always needs replacing at the same time - why is that not included???I have replaced the pinion and bearing on my now 320 hour, 2004 TroyBilt Horse Lawn Tractor once before, but never the quadrant. This time, the pinion and bearing were shot and I thought it time to replace the quadrant also. This kit was just what I needed when combined with the shaft bearing, bought separately (!)Unfortunately, the Horse is one of the worst machines I've ever worked on for serviceability. What should have been a 1 hour job with 5 nuts/bolts turned out to be 5 hours. TroyBilt designed the 2 retaining fasteners for the quadrant with loose nuts on the blind side of the frame! I had to remove everything (mower deck, hood and sidepanels, fuel tank, linkages and loosen/lower the subframe) to get to the backs of the fasteners to remove them. If they'd used captive nuts, it would have been SO SIMPLE!

Fits the cub cadet gt1554 perfectly. You must use the included nuts for the tie rod studs as they are different threads. I don't know what the washer is for, didn't fit anywhere on mine. The steering pinion gear is a great replacement. There should be a plastic washer for above the pinion gear, but I couldn't locate one before I repaired mine.

This kit would be even better if it included the bushing on the steering shaft that is the other sacrificial part. IMHO to offer this kit without that is incomplete. I ordered it separately. Had I not done extensive research, realizing I needed that too, I would have been very disappointed. Also would have been without a tractor for a second week while waiting for additional parts.IF these are the only parts you need, then this kit will likely meet your expectations. In most cases the plate is fine and the softer brass components are heavily worn. Do your research, or take your tractor apart and inspect all the related pieces.

As shown and arrived quickly, only thing that is missing that should be included in this package is a new shoulder spacer. Had to purchase one separately but not a big deal. Other than that, this product was a easy install on my Toro LX 460
