Q: Does this go in with the aluminum base first and then pull through the bottom so it’s not removed bristles side first causing splaying of bristles?

The brush goes into the body base first. The bristles are compressed upright without splaying or damage. To use, the brush slides out of the body and then the base of the brush screws into the body which the acts as a handle.

Q: What is the size of the travel cylinder when closed with the brush head stored inside?

The closed size of the brush, "travel configuration" is 3.625", the major diameter [there are embossed ridges] is 1.25". The brush doesn't fill the entire length of the tube while stored. The brush portion, including the metal base is 2.8125" and of that, the base is 0.78125". As a matter of opinion, the brush feels well made and the cast tube is more substantial than my previous travel brush which was fabricated sheet tubing. The thread on the cap is excessively fine for the application but it just means that some care must be taken to avoid cross threading. 'Like I said, "opinion".
