Mine blew a fuse on the lights wire with 3 50ft strings connected. The box doesn't come with more fuses either.

Q: I want to hang these in my yard for a party in November; still have leaves on the trees. Do the bulbs get hot -- is there a fire hazard?

The bulbs do get warm. I hung them on an interior wall and left them in for a few hours. The bulbs were definitely creating heat but cool enough that I could touch the bulbs. If it's chilly at all in the winter where you live I imagine it wouldn't be a problem.

Q: Could I cut off 10' or so, reconnect the wires, solder /seal them, and expect the bulbs to work? I understand the warranty would be void.

The bulbs are connected in parallel. I shortened the string by 3 or 4 bulbs then sealed the individual conductors. Works fine. But modifying them raises safety concerns - the string carries 120v - so seal well BE CAREFUL! BTW the “outdoosiness” is iffy as the bulbs screw in and are not waterproof. Use a gfi.

Q: How many of these strings can you connect?

Not sure but I did 2 for 100 ft and all is well... Even doing fine in the frigid Chicago winter months
