OK for newbies - but not for truly bad work situations
The book lays out endurance strategies that employees usually devise on their own as they become experienced workers ("unhooking" or "depersonalizing" to reduce the stresses of conflict). Given that, this book could be useful for devising short term fixes, especially for people new to the workforce. But despite the "killing me" in the title, Crowley and Elster assume that difficult bosses are not abusing employees, so if you are being sexually harassed, cheated of your wages, pushed into dangerous working conditions, or struggling with other forms of outright abusive work practices, this book won't help in the least. It may in fact add to the pressure you feel to accept/deny the abuse or to blame yourself for it. Look elsewhere if you want to understand the rights and protections you have and how to use them.

Great Advice
There was a lot of great ideas and advice, which I appreciated. However, my supervisor and my situation are so unique that I couldn't plug either of them into any scenarios. Only bits and pieces applied here and there. It was comforting to see something I had already implemented with my supervisor stressed in the book. I think she is still not completely on board with the idea, but she is meeting with me weekly per my request. However, when she first consented to the meetings, she said we could meet weekly or bi-weekly until I was "comfortable". She obviously didn't get the concept of constant communication.

Having trouble at work? Read this book.
This book shows the different types of work situations and how a person can deal with them. Since using the information in this book my job is now fun and I'm getting along with my boss so much better. I only have a couple of years left before retirement and it is a relief that I will enjoy them.

If you feel like this read the book
I wish I had owned this book years ago when i worked in fast food and had to contend with bullying bosses, at least onehad friends higher up who were blind to his faults. I've also encountered a few since I left fast food but fortunately they areno longer in the picture. I also had to work with some other employees with issues.

This is a very helpful and informative book that gave me a lot of ideas as to deal with difficult customers, as well as a very difficult coworker. I highly recommend it. I found it to be one of the best books on difficult workplace relationships I have read.

Excellent suggestions on "managing up" incompetent and uncommunicative bosses
Excellent suggestions on "managing up" incompetent and uncommunicative bosses, setting boundaries, and determining whether or not you should stay or go. I'm still reading it and absorbing the wisdom.Unhooking is key and I'm working on using their suggestions to do exactly that.

Things you may already know....
The CD was very easy listening. Most of the CD/book spent time explaining tools you may already understand, but may not know how to use. The books is helpful to anyone just starting their career and have to work in a large office space. The hooks and types of people at work were very interesting. I thought the explanation of how to handle the siuation when a peer announces your idea as their own during a meeting to be pretty helpful. This actually does happen quite a bit, especially in the consulting areas.

It helped me refocus
I had to tolerate a coworker who invaded my interpersonal space for two years. She had one volume setting - loud and spent much of the day talking about her personal life and inbetween making careless mistakes which fell on me to clear up. This triggered a physical/mental and emotional reaction. I felt imprisoned and developed a rash/tiredness and bouts of angry explosions taking it out on innocent bystanders. My boss found her difficult to control so accomodated her requests for sick leave/working from home, lateness, wrong kind of snow etc. Each time she made a request the boundaries were expanded to accomodate her. Recently I took 2weeks off work and decided I needed help so ordered these cds. What a transformation. The cds which I played in the car became a source of comfort and support. I refocused. Upon my return to work my boss called me in to tell me that the irritant had resigned. It was like being given parole. I do want to point out that this member of staff was a junior and my position was more senior, so heirachy counts for nothing when toxic people are around you. The cds remain a source of support as you can apply the different techniques to any situation. I strongly recommend if you want to improve or cope better with interactions with difficult others, of which you may be one - you have been warned!

If you haven't read it yet, then just do it. You will see yourself and others in it. You could put a picture of every person you know next to each case described in the book. Very helpful.

Excelente

Not what I needed
I was hoping that this would provide to be a good guide to how to deal with a very difficult partner in our workplace but, as I work in London, I found the book was totally focussed on the US style of working and office structure which appears to be totally different from the way we work in the UK. Many of the points made would not apply over here. Also, the book had a series of question and answer and, though it was described as beig in good condition as it was a used book, in fact there were many pages of handwriting, margin notes and all the proposed answers to the questions and scenarios throughout the book. I was very disappointed.
