The last album by The Watersons, from 1981 and in keeping with its title, the album focuses on songs of country life. The splendid original album with Lal, Mike and Norma Waterson and Martin Carthy is augmented with solo tracks from Mike, and solo and duet tracks from Lal and Norma.

final watersons studio album
Green Fields is an outstanding release from the wonderful Watersons. After success in the 1960s Sisters Norma and Lal Waterson and their Brother Mike together with their cousin John Harrison went through a line up change in the 1970s when Harrison left and was replaced by Bernie Vickers who later also left and was replaced by Martin Carthy. Then after success with the albums Four Pence and Spicy ale, For Pence and Spicy Ale and Sound, sound your instrument of joy Sound, Sound Your Instruments of Joy and non group projects such as True hearted Girl by Lal and Norma Waterson A True Hearted Girl and solo album Mike Waterson Mike Waterson The group made this final album together as The Watersons. This CD version of the original album has been padded out. Or to put it another way it has been expanded. Track four and ten are actually from the previously mentioned solo album called Mike Waterson. And track 9 is from the previously mentioned album True Hearted Girl by Lal and Norma Waterson, The other tracks 1,2,3,5.6.7.8,11-17 are from the original album. The album is rich in the beauty of English Traditional Folk Songs. The distinctive harmony sound of the group is on excellent form with some fabulous songs. The album celebrates country life and the working jobs in the country. There are songs that celebrates the work of shepherds and their songs.(Stormy Winds) and (The Lincolnshire Shepherd )There is also a song about those that would build the embankment walls from stone. (Young Banker) And songs about gamekeepers (The gamekeeper lies sleeping), hunting, (We'll go a hunting today), Poaching (hares in the old plantation) and plough work (The Brave Ploughboy)There is a wonderful recording of the ever-impressive traditional song Rosebuds in June, and an equally impressive version of The Prickle Holly Bush. The original album dates from 1981 and the sound is very good. Topic records have done a fine job with this re issue of a great album and I highly recommend it to anyone that likes the Watersons or Martin Carthy. This album is an important release of a now classic line up of an important group. The album is also a good record of English Traditional Folk Songs.

Well worth the money!
This presents the more traditional Watersons. It is well worth a listen, if only to remind us of earlier times in Britain, before the advent of rampany capitalism and greed. For most people life at that time was very hard!
