A good tip would be using a slightly larger (in diameter) vegetable as it makes the slicing easier.

I spent quite some time -- hours, actually -- considering what I wanted in a spiralizer. A plug-in appliance was tempting, but I didn't want something that took up room and required assembly and disassembly. The KitchenAid accessory had a-peel (tee hee) but unless you're cooking for 40 people, it seemed a bit over the top. This device ticked every box. It's compact, dishwasher-safe and delightfully low-tech. I had expected it to be made in Germany; had I known it was an import from China, I would have skipped. But the spiralizer is patented and it appears to be sturdy and thoughtfully designed. The spirals were a uniform shape and thickness. So I feel it's worth the 17 or so bucks. Some tips: -- I can't stress this enough: Cut the vegetable with kitchen shears every 8 to 12 inches as those glorious strands emerge. You'll avoid a world of unintended comedy when, expecting spaghetti-like cooperation as you twirl with your fork, you instead wind up with an eagle's nest-size clump. It may be all yummy goodness, and the Weight Watchers chorus may be serenading you and your low-point meal, but really: In all your excitement, don't forget to shear. -- Aim the vegetable straight to the bottom of the device and twist by hand -- that is, don't start with the finger protector. Your hand is more efficient. You'll notice a blade on the device's side. Don't think that with every turn you must angle the vegetable to pass over that blade. Just keep pushing STRAIGHT down and the device's design takes care of the rest. -- Use the finger protector only when you don't have enough vegetable to grasp, and be aware that its grippers may shred the top of the vegetable and make it difficult to turn. That's what happened to my carrot and zucchini. Not a big deal.
